In Homer's The Odyssey, what is the purpose of the author's work? What is Homer trying to tell our society today?

  1. I think the main purpose of the Odyssey is to show that true love can last through anything. Odysseus went through many trials and hard times. Penelope had to feed, clothe, and take care of 100 rude men. I think Homer is trying to say that even though things may look bad now, when you see your true love again, everything will turn out alright.

  22. The purpose of The Odyssey was most likely to tell a story about Odysseus who was determined not to give up. Throughout his adventures, he learned a lot about how to become a better leader as he learned more about himself. Although he became a better leader, it got to his head and he had a downfall as a tragic hero would. I think that Homer may have been trying to get the message across that when we are in a good place, such as a great hero as Odysseus was, we don't need to become so greedy that we commit inhumane acts.

  48. The main idea of The Odyssey is that humans have no control over their fate. Human lives are guided by destiny. Mortals will be happier when they stop fighting fate. Odysseus struggled against Triton, Scylla, and Helios. Once he gave in to and was obedient to the God’s power, they allowed him to return home and fight off the suitors. Homer is trying to tell our society to take life as it comes. There are some situations we cannot change and have no control over. The best we as individuals can do is take what is allotted to us and make the most of it. We will be happier in the long end.
