Reflecting on Brains

After completing the brain test, and reading intro-3 of AWNM, what are you thinking about brains? What are you thinking about your own learning? How does all of this relate to education, to you personally, and to the world?

58 comments:

  1. My results showed that I am 31% left brain and 69% right brain. This makes me think about what Daniel Pink was saying about jobs of the future being "right-brained" and what I can do in the future. My learning should probably be focused less on memorizing and more on learning things through a fun, memorable way. Everyone learns differently, but classes and other learning environments should probably offer many ways to learn the material so that everyone gets the best learning environment they possibly can.

  2. My results for the brain test said I am more right brain oriented, but only by 8%. That does not come as too much of a surprise to me. AWNM really interests me because although I can process things in a linear fashion, I prefer to look at things from a more right brained point of view. For example, I prefer going with my intuition and that usually turns out well for me. I do not necessarily enjoy planning everything out detail by detail. This definitely relates to education because it affects how I learn, as well as how other students learn based on their results. And it also relates to me as to what I would like to do in the future and what path I could see myself taking in life. All of this makes a lot of sense about how I learn because I know that I learn in a more visual way, sometimes needing more explanation. I also like projects that allow me to be more creative. To the world as a whole this could mean a huge change in life and technology and education and careers if most students are like this. It could greatly affect the future. As Daniel Pink puts it, I believe we are entering the "Conceptual Age".

  3. My results on the test said that I am 50% left brain 51% right brain. After this test and reading what Daniel had to say about brains, I think that he is absolutely right on what he was saying about right-brained people being the successful people in the future. This makes me think that in my own learning, I shouldn't focus so much on memorization and that I should focus more on new ways of learning.

  4. Through the results of the brain test and the predictions and observations made by Daniel Pink, it is clear that the use of both sides of the brain is equally important. The results I was given after completing the test revealed that I rely on both sides of my brain to make decisions and complete tasks. However, I have a tendency to use the right side of my brain more often. This tells me that my learning can be better managed when I use pictures, gestures and creative techniques. In today's education system, some of these right brain techniques appear to be overlooked. The integration of such practices in the classroom such as using music, pictures, and self directed learning may help students be more effective and well rounded. The world, according to Daniel Pink, is changing. The need for right brain learning and exploration will soon be necessary for all graduates looking for a successful career in the future.

  5. Well, this brain stuff isn't all that new to me, to be honest. After taking the brain test, it told me I was 55% left brained and 45% right brained - nearly equal, but still more dominant on the left side, and I could have predicted that. Of course, that's only proving Pink's ideas that left brains are dominant in most people. I suppose only time will tell, though, if the shift will occur. What I mostly wonder about brains is this: are left thinking people more abundant because society has exercised the left side of our brains more than right, or because that is how humans were programmed to be?

If Pink is right and computers will take my future career, then I suppose I'll simply have to switch over to right-brain thinking and learning, which may not be too hard unless people get stuck on trying to teach this way. The way I see these two types of learning is that left brain is easier to teach a group but right brain is easier when teaching yourself. Both are essential. Without one being exercised, things would be incomplete and we wouldn't get nearly as much out of school time. That would just bother me. Can you imagine an art class where the teacher tells you exactly what to do, what materials to use, what techniques to use, leaving no room for thought or creativity on your part? When people are young, the focus is on getting them to follow directions and order. But as people get older they need to realize that there won't always be someone there to give direction. Exercise the right brain, already!

But again, that's a challenge. How do you keep people "in-line" without overdoing it on the left brain? In government and school and society, if right brains dominated, I can't help but wonder what kind of systems would be in place - if any at all.

  6. After completing the survey online, I have discovered that my left brain is more dominant than my right brain. My left brain dominance was 67% over the right brain with only 33%. Although I was not surprised with these results, for all of my life I have taken several of these type quizzes and ended up with similar results. However after reading the first 3 chapters of A Whole New Mind I was amazed at how important the right brain can be in order to be “well rounded”. I think that after taking this test I will take the time to maybe pay more attention to things in the right brain that I lack and see if there are ways for improvement, and ways I can apply how I learn best from this quiz to my learning every day. Everybody’s individual brain relates to education because people need to be aware of how they personally learn and how they are able to obtain knowledge the best taking advantage of their stronger side of their brain. This would help the world because they may be able to find different ways of doing things showing people’s strengths and finding them ways to help themselves through these strengths. So I think that being aware of how your own individual brain works extends to how successful a person may be.

  7. My test said that I am 47% left brain and 53% right. I find the opinions set forth in AWNM interesting because of the contrasts he finds between right brain and left brain thinkers. I also find it interesting how he views both parts of the brain as being crucial, but then goes and says the right brain is what really matters. I do agree with many of the points he is setting forth. Anything that can be done by computers now will take over for the humans who were previously doing those jobs. This book also leaves me wondering. If we come from such a "left brain" world, and now are moving towards a "right brain" world, what will the next step be? If we designed computers to do the jobs of our left brain, won't we be able to make something to do the job of our right brain eventually? What will the next age be, after Daniel Pink's "Conceptual Age"?

  8. After taking the brain test and reading intro- chapter 3 in AWNM, I am thinking that brains are very complex organs. I never knew that my thinking and analysis was based so much on one side of my brain, and drawing and creativity on the other. I've always believed that both halves of the brain contribute equal amounts of information, but after seeing that my left side contributes 66%, and my right side contributes 34%, I have changed my perspective. I think this test was accurate though, because it proved that I tend to learn best in a structured and organized environment. I have always known that my creativity and drawing skills have never been fantastic, and this was just more proof. This test should be taken by students all over the world in order for school administrators to change their curriculum in order to better benefit each student.

  9. After taking the brain test I found that I am 36% left brained and 64% right brained. I am a more creative person than a logical one and I learn better through big picture thinking than through memorizing facts. I think that according to A Whole New Mind, this is a positive thing. I agree with a lot of what Daniel Pink says in A Whole New Mind. I think that it is just as, if not more, important to excell creatively and see the whole picture, as it is to think logically and understand every piece of the picture. I think that education is changing and becoming a much more open ended experience. Education now allows for much more creativity and out of the box thinking than it has in the past. Education is becoming more intuitavly based than logically based. I think that it is hard to deny that we are entering the "Conceptual Age". The world is changing and it is no longer enough to know everything, you have to know how everything fits together and how to use it. I think that personally this is a good thing because I am definately a more big picture thinker than one who picks it apart.

  10. The results on the Brain Creativity Test showed that the right side of my brain is highly more predominate than my left side of the brain. This led me to think of how in, A Whole New Mind, how Daniel Pink predicts that the future will present success to right-brained people, rather than left-brained people- I completely agree. Living creatively is, in my opinion, much better. I believe that right-brained people will have great success in the future because of the
    creativity that they have.

  11. The message that I received from the beginning of AWNM and the brain test was that the brain is always changing, just as society and technology are. Because of the shift in learning our brains are changing as well, in a sense that the side that was previously used for education is now not as much of a focus point. In my case, this is accurate because I learn information better when it is given to me in a creative manner. This will change the education system because classes where all you do is take notes, will become useless. Similarly, people doing jobs where the only task to do is read or type, will have trouble because their brain will not be using the side that is more fit for work.

  12. My test results showed that I was 32% left brained, and 68% right brained. This means that I learn more fictional and creatively, while using images and symbols to aid my success. For me, topics and questions need to be more open ended, and I don't like to follow a structure as much as I like to let my mind wander and think on it's own. I tend to process randomly and don't prioritize well. Daniel Pink talks about how "right brained" people will have more success in the future and will run the world.

  13. I think that brains are really important in society. They control us, we use them every day, and we need to learn more about them. The test that we took showed me that I am more of a right brainer and not as logical. I just jump into what I am doing. I go with my gut feeling and act first and then think later. As it shows in Daniel Pink book, A Whole New Mind, it is that type of person that is going to control the future. The people that are more artistic and think about the big picture are the ones that will be more successful. This book might change the way that everybody thinks, especially school. They will teach more about instincs and artistic sides of people rather than having strict plans and sticking to them. Everything would be less organized and more chaotic if you ask me, but it also might become more of a big picture world other than color inside the box world. People will learn to get out of old rutines and not paint inside the lined but be rebels and think outside the box. People will not be as organized but they will be much more mindful of everything around them. As for me, I might do really well in that kind of world. Where there is not organization and I am not a step behind in that. I like to see the big picture so that might work out well for me. This whole left brain right brain thing could change the way that the world looks and inside the lines vs. outside the lines.

  14. My results showed that I am 45% left brained and 55% right brained. I completely agree with Mr. Pink about how he said the future will be of right brained thinkers and they will be successful. This brain test was very interesting and I thought it was interesting how I could process things linearly and also look at from a creative perspective.
This was a great experience and I now realize that creativity, something that has been shunned in the past, is going to help shape the future.

  15. My results were 65% right brained and 35% left brained. My random processing score was very high showing that it is hard for me to learn things in sequence. this is very indicative of my learning as it is easy for me remember the events, but not so easy for me to remember which came first and last. I should probably color code things like notes to help me remember chronologic events. Educators should use more memorable techniques like activities that involve movement or pictures to help people like me learn the materials better and have a deeper understanding of the material.

  16. That's a kind of funny question: what do you think of brains? What does my brain think of brains? would be more appropriate, I should think. Personally though, I was astonished with my results! The brain test revealed that I was 56% left-brained and 44% right-brained. I would have thought that I was much more left brained, but I'm not. I think this effects my learning in many ways. For one, it changes the way that I should logically approach learning. If my brain is split nearly fifty-fifty, shouldn't I switch my learning tactics fifty-fifty? It also brings me to a new point of thinking in education. Everyone's brain functions differently, and education should help that. If someone is more right-brained, and the school is teaching from a left-brained perspective, aren't they stealing from the right-brained persons learning? Is it not unfair that schools teach from one side of the brain, when the students may function on the complete other side of the brain?
To myself personally, it makes me think that maybe I should watch how I learn, and what I want to do for my future. Knowing the percentages of my brain makes me think and want to utilize that information in the most effective way.
The world needs to be introduced to a new level of thinking. And maybe it's not a completely new level we've never experienced before, but a level that we have buried and forgotten. It is a level we need to re-explore and capture, so that all minds won't be working right-brained or left-brained, but as one. Maybe we need to see the world with "a whole new mind".

  17. After taking this test and reading through the third chapter of A Whole New Mind, it made me think about how the two hemispheres of the human brain work together to form harmony. Over and over again, both in the test results and in the book, the concept of the hemispheres complimenting each other was emphasized. I found my results to be a little misleading. Often times, the results showed that I was not apt to process information visually; however, that is not true. I found especially interesting the part that said that I had a 0% in random processing, but I do sometimes. I found these results to be very large generalizations; this was most likely due to the fact there was only four answer choices with no exact middle. Furthermore, I found some of the results to be contradictory. For example, at one point it told me that drawing out math problems would help me; however, it later told me that I did not learn visually. When thinking about my own learning, the test demonstrated that I should focus on memorization and not on trying to memorize in an inventive way. This relates to education, because the results varied across the board. If the teacher had access to this sort of statistics, he/she may plan lessons to fit the classes' general characteristics but may offer options for those who differ from the group. Students in the classroom would learn more effectively if everyone had access to this information. This furthermore relates to the world, because the world, as Mr. Pink said, is changing to a more right-brained community. If people had access to tests to show their right and left brain dominance, humans would be more ready for the changes of the world.

  18. My results really surprised me. I always thought of myself as being more of a creative person vs. a logical thinker but my left side was slightly higher. However, I learned from reading AWNM that just because I enjoy doing creative activities does not necessarily mean that I use the right side of my brain more. It is a lot more about how you process information and specifically how you think than what you enjoy. I tend to be a very organized person and sequential thinker, always planning and making lists. When it comes to education, I prefer and work better with step by step instructions rather than more open guidelines. To a world application I think this shows how differently everyone thinks, which I believe should be taken into consideration with education and careers.

  19. When I took the Brain Test I had 32% left and 68% right brained. This was pretty predictable for me since many people before have told me that I am "right-brained." The right brain analysis showed that I prove to do better in projects that I get emotionally attached to and allow me to be more creative. Essay's in Smith's class were a challenge because they were set to only tell information rather then tell a story. If I was able to write essays the way that I normally would, I think that they would contribute more. My learning is one that requires a creative side to it. If someone said 'create a story about your favorite class this year' I would start with a quote and go into details using the present-text in third person instead of just descibing it. This relates me to the world because in the book A Whole New Mind, Pink is trying to prove that people like me are going to further succeed in the world because of our unique ability to weave story's out of boring lines and find hidden pictures behind a newspaper article. In the world we are creatin today, people like me are going to thrive. This relates to education in general because people like me find essays that are more strict hard to write, so maybe this would help future english teachers understand why some students don't do as well on the essays that are stricter. I think that they should assign more linient essays to see how each child really writes with lots of freedom to write in the style they like best.

  20. After taking the brain test and reading A Whole New Mind's first chapters, I think that brains are very intricate, and in exploring them, so many things can be learned. Because the brain test said that I was left-brain dominant, I learn better when I know things are rational. Education in the world is broken for some students because people learn differently. Because people learn differently, schools and teachers should welcome that by offering classes geared towards different learning styles.
If programs like this would be offered, kids, teenagers, and adults alike would learn more and retain more knowledge.I do not agree with Daniel Pink, however, that the right-brained humans will be more successful because as a society, we will always need doctors, bankers, lawyers, and other left-brained thinkers. AWNM and the brain test demonstrate how thinking should be changed in the long run.

  21. After the test, I found out that I am 50% left brain and 51% right brain. After seeing other people's results, it is more common to have a higher dominance of right brainers, just like Daniel Pink predicted. The results said that I can retain information through the use of patterns and images the easiest. I am also organized and I think about the reality of things more than the logic. All the results were pretty accurate, but they could all differ in different situations. That could be why my left and right brain dominance was pretty even. This relates to school because it helps me understand what methods of learning help me the most and where I struggle. It also helps me understand what situations my personality would best fit in and that would help me for future careers. Since there is a larger number of right brainers, these right brainers will be successful in the future because the world may become more friendly or organized in a way that is useful to right brainers. So, Daniel Pink was right when he said that right brainers will be more successful in the future.

  22. My results show that I am 52% left brained and 48% right brained. This information shows me that I am using both parts of my head, brain if you will and therefore am applicable for any task. In relation to what Mr.Pink was saying about the world soon to be run by right brained people, I disagree. Mainly because I am a left brained person, however I seem to think that world will always require the help of both type people. There has always been a certain balance and without that the succession of man might not be possible. From the test however it concluded that I am a very linear type learner. In other words I am straight forward to the point and dislike meddling around to find the solution. From an educational view, it says that I need to be told an answer before I can find another, or things need to be spelled out before I am able to attribute it to another topic or book. Education today is leaning more upon rote memorization, which is stressful and usually teaches nothing. There needs to be a balance in classrooms for both the right and left brained learners and thinkers.

  24. After taking the brain test, I learned that I am 46% left brain and 54% right brain. I think that this test is based off of the left and right brains working separately, even though they might not. I also learned that my right brain controls the left side of my body, which makes sense because I am left-handed.
My personal learning should be mostly through patterns, because that's the best way for me to retain information. The way I go about a problem may seem totally illogical, and it's the complete opposite of how a left-brained person would go about a problem, but it's innovative, and that's what works for me.
My results go along with the idea of A Whole New Mind- right-brainers will rule the future. It seems to me that most people are right-brained. However, the jobs that the brain test showed me didn't seem very important as some of the other jobs out there (possibly left-brained jobs).
Based on my results, it would appear as though right-brained people are more creative and spontaneous, whereas left-brained people are organized and logical. I think that everyone should be able to learn using their own method, because they would be able to better develop into their own person, and this could change the world.

  25. Brains are like snowflakes; each one different; each one extremely complex. I am finding that it is very difficult to understand how the human brain works because it is so different for each person. An example of this is the test I have just taken. It found that I am right brain dominant (55% to 45%) and that I am more linear and intuitive and less verbal and fantasy based. While I did agree primarily with the main grouping of the analysis, as I looked at the more detailed analysis I found that from my point of view, most of the details were either lacking in their analysis of my brain or completely wrong.
All this seems to add up to the idea that learning is not precise, because, just like brains, no two methods are alike and my methods are no better than anyone else's. I now have a better respect for how difficult it is to be a teacher, but I also think that there is a great deal more to teaching than just giving students the material and teachers should be responsible for making sure that learning is happening. Education is really not to the standards it should be, and this is because it is taking such large hits. I think that the whole world should put just a little more focus on education.

  26. My test results showed that is am 58% left brain and 42% right brain. This is not very surprising to me; I was guessing that I would be more "left-brain" than "right-brain." After reading Intro-3 in AWNM and the discoveries of the brain, I have started questioning my own brain. Before now, I just thought of it as a large organ in my skull that literally got me through every day, and not much more. I mean, I know everyone is different, so everyone's brain is different, but I never brains could be so drastically different. I have been questioning one thing... if "right-brainers" are guesses to be the one's succeeding more in the future, why are we still being taught more logic rather that creativity? It doesn't make sense. This test result seems to be accurate for the most part, I prefer logical, concrete ideas and answers rather that broad, indirect, creative ideas and answers. I have a high linear percentage which shows that i like logic and am able to use solid information to draw conclusions, solve problem, and provide answers. I think it is funny how left-brainers seem to be the ones succeeding currently, such as engineers and doctors, yet right-brainer are guessed to be the ones succeeding in the future. It is funny to think that such are large change could happen very soon and very quickly. After taking this test, I am going to try to improve the usage of my right-brain, so I can equal out the usage of the two hemispheres and possible become a better learner.

  27. After completing the brain test the results were that I am a 60% right brained user and a 40% left brain user. As many others have already commented, this made me think back to when Pink said that the future jobs of society would be compatible for right brain users. I agree with my results because I do think that I like learning in fun ways that will help with memorization but also keep learning fun. I think that future schools and bussiness should look at incorporating jobs and learning strategies into their organization for people of both sides.

  28. I was fascinated with my results. The test said that I am 48% left brain, and 52% right brain, about half and half. I thought this was interesting because this is exactly what I have been thinking about with A Whole New Mind, and I think that Mr. Pink is incorrect, because a combination of both right and left brains is what I consider a successful mind in the world today.
I believe that in order to succeed, both halves of the brain need to function and come up with effective ideas together. I prefer to think that I am more left brained, because I have many interests, like law, science, and medicine, which fall under that category. I do not think that “wishy-washy” ideas are good; I like to have structure and concrete evidence to back ideas and theories up. However, I am involved in many arts, like music. I find that even though playing an instrument is more of a “right-brained” activity, I am affected by my music in other ways. I find that I can relate math to music on occasion.
All in all, I believe that a good combination of both sides of the brain will help you succeed in the world. I am angered that the left-brained people seem to be looked down upon in AWNM because clearly, you need both sides of the brain to survive in the world today.

  29. To me brains are crazy, it is like you are thinking about what happens to you when you die, you just don't know. Everything that a person thinks about or relates to happens in the five inches between your ears! Sure we have computers that can perform calculations and problems faster than most humans, but we made them its our creations that we control. It seems that some how we were given more power and knowledge in life. Learning generally happens whenever I am not sleeping, I take part in exercises and activities all the time without knowing it. Many of the learning styles expressed by brain testing aren't expressed or used in typical classrooms. I think schools need to teach more towards each person's specific learning style and traits.

  30. My results showed that I was 37% left minded and 63% right minded. I think this is very fitting to the way I learn and the way that I interact with others. As I am reading A Whole New Mind I am learning that one’s brain is more complex that I could have imagined. It is very cool to go with Pink on a journey through the thinking of each type brain.

    ReplyDelete
  31. So I thought I would let you all into my brain. Here are my scores:
    right brain 45%
    left brain 55%

    Your Left Brain Percentages

53% Sequential (Your most dominant characteristic)
    32% Linear
    30% Logical
    25% Symbolic
    14% Verbal
14% Reality-based (Your least dominant characteristic)

    Your Right Brain Percentages

46% Concrete (Your most dominant characteristic)
    30% Holistic
    29% Intuitive
    25% Nonverbal
    24% Fantasy-oriented
6% Random (Your least dominant characteristic)

I guess I would agree with some of the assessments of my brain. I definitely think things out, I plan my day and my schedule, and am a critical thinker. However, I am not much of a number person nor think about things in terms of numbers. I do create lists, check them off, and then create new lists to complete tasks. I like to do things in a sequential order that makes sense and is efficient in my mind. As far as the sequential side of things, I do things always in a certain order and often need to see a visual of what someone is talking about in order to process it. To truly learn something, I need to see it and do it.

The one area I am learning more about myself over time is what it described as not seeing the whole picture. This is one area in my life I know I lack. When Mr. Fisch and I present, this is why I think we are a good pair. He is a big picture guy but I complete the practical application side of his ideas in our presentations.

  32. After I took the test, I ended with about a 50/50 score pertaining to the the more dominant side of my brain, with a small tendency towards the right. As I was looking at the results, most of the summations seemed very accurate for my style of learning. I can easily see how Daniel Pink thinks that those who use their right brain will do better in the future. If his prediction is correct, the way that I learn will change greatly, as the purpose of school at this point in my life is just gathering information and learning how to gather it on my own. I will have to adapt my learning style to use the information in a way that will be beneficial and creative for others. Brains are extremely complex, but at the same time they are just an intricate system of connections. If we are going to move forward in the future, we will have to change our brains and the style that they are used to fit the demands and information of a new world where information is easily accessible, but the way that it is used is open for interpretation, a task that those who think with their right brain will be able to accomplish more easily.Below I am attaching my full results.

    Left Brain Right Brain
    47% 53%

You are more right-brained than left-brained. The right side of your brain controls the left side of your body. In addition to being known as right-brained, you are also known as a creative thinker who uses feeling and intuition to gather information. You retain this information through the use of images and patterns. You are able to visualize the "whole" picture first, and then work backwards to put the pieces together to create the "whole" picture. Your thought process can appear quite illogical and meandering. The problem-solving techniques that you use involve free association, which is often very innovative and creative. The routes taken to arrive at your conclusions are completely opposite to what a left-brained person would be accustomed. You probably find it easy to express yourself using art, dance, or music. Some occupations usually held by a right-brained person are forest ranger, athlete, beautician, actor/actress, craftsman, and artist.

  33. My results said that I was 54% left brain and 46% right brain. I was kind of anticipating these results because I know that I am very organized in everything I do and that I use logic and critical thinking through decisions and work that I do. By read A Whole New Mind I disagree with the aspect the other is protraying. I do not think that because people are more right brained that they will rule the work force and will be more successful this generation. It does not make sense because people who are very organized and work with a tight schedule are still very successful today and it does not seem like that is going to change. I like to learn in different ways in school but I do think that students need a solid environment when it comes to learning important facts and concept.

  34. This test showed that I am more right brain oriented. I am 52% right brained and only 48% left brained. Although I am more right brained, I am only by a little. My brain is almost equally. My most dominant feature on the right brain was intuitive. This means that when I feel that something is right or wrong, most of the time I am correct. This made me think about what Daniel Pink said in A Whole New Mind. Looking at the different categories that the right and left brains contain, I honestly do not think that the future will be "controlled" by the right brain people. It seems like someone needs a balance of both right and left brain features in order to thrive in today’s society.

  35. My results from the brain test show that I am 42% left brained and 58% right brained. I agree with these results because I am a very random person. I don't like to put things in order and I am definitely not organized. I tend to "go with the flow". I believe that this is how most people in the world act. The test also claims that I am very concrete which means that I don't look into things much. This is definitely true. This relates to my writing because most of my essays are very short. I typically answer the question and then leave. I don't go into depth about it.

  36. I am honestly not very surprised by the results given. According to the quiz, I am 39% left brain and 61% right brain. My specialty is being concrete, for, I have a hard time believing people unless I am shown proof. This means I can read people well. It says that I tend to see the big picture fist, then fill in the little pieces, in which I use very systematic and sequential problem solving. Sometimes when this does not work out, I can use my random and intuition to find new creative ways, that simply “feel-right”. One thing I am especially lacking in is my verbal ability, for I have a difficult time conveying my ideas through words. By learning these aspects about myself and beginning A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink, I think my brain is in a very good place. According to the beliefs of Pink, I will be very successful in the future, but in the present day, I have acquired tools to help me succeed in most situations.

  37. The results of the test showed that I am 54% left brained and 46& right brained. As learner I have always excelled in math and science, where there is a definite right or wrong answer. Classes that involve a large amount of creativity always cause me trouble. Pink's argument that right brain people will succeed in what the calls the "Conceptual age" does have its merit. I believe that it requires both sides of the brain to be successful. Ideas from the right brain come to life when executed by the left brain. The right brain ideas come from the existing things the left brain has created in the world. One cannot exist without the other and one fuels one another.

  38. My results for the Brain Test were 64% right brain and 36% left brain. In Daniel Pink’s, A Whole New Mind, Pink talks about right brained people having good jobs and ruling the world. I don’t know about ruling the world but I definitely think that right brained people may have better opportunities to get the jobs they want because jobs are moving away from structure and concrete guidelines and more into creative, how we can make things better jobs. AWNM is interesting because it makes people think in a way they are not used to seeing things. Being right or left brained connects to education because there are different ways different people learn. For example, you may be right brained but have a teacher that just lectures you for a whole hour. Right brained people may not get as much out of this lesson then left brained people because they learn a different way. If a right brain person has a teacher with lots of visuals and activities to go along with the lesson, chances are they will learn the material better then the left brain people. It was really interesting to see my results because I know that I learn better with visual things and hands on activities. I tend to go with my gut instinct which usually turns out for the better for me. I would agree with Daniel Pink in saying that we are entering a “Conceptual Age”.

  40. After completing the brain test, the test showed that I am 57% left-brained and 43% right-brained. This makes me wonder why my left brain works more then the right because they are both of equal size in the cranium. The results really show my learning because I have found that I learn in a very logical, left-brained way. My education needs to be structured and focused to learn best. This relates to the world in many ways because people like Daniel Pink, think that right-brain will become more important in society. I, of course think that will never happen because the world need logical people to control what is going on. If there are not as many left-brainers the world would be a random mess of randomness. Taking the test again my results were 60% left and 40% right. Both times my linear and symbolic were super high, and random and holistic were low. Not that I want to work on improving my right brain, but I know that if the world turns out like Daniel Pink thinks, I will have too. Right brain thinking is just too distracting and you do not learn anything in a structured logical way.

  41. I am 51% right brained and 49% left brained. This came as somewhat of a surprise to me, because I thought I would be more left brained. I think what this means for my learning is that I need to continue learning how I am learning. Being about equivalent with left and right brained means that I am a little more versatile. I think this means that I can adapt to jobs that are in need of a right or left brained person. Pink thinks that left brained jobs are going to start disappearing, but I disagree, because if these jobs are taken over by computers or something of that sort, what will make those things? To cause these jobs to go away there will be jobs created that are highly left brained. You will need highly analytical and systematic people to take these jobs away. So, to to take away left brained jobs, you have to create left brained jobs. It is just an endless cycle of left brained jobs, and the right brained jobs will always be there.

  43. My test showed that I am 43% left brain and 57% right brain. I thought I would have been more right brain because I am not the creative type. My highest score for my left brain was symbolic and that is usually how I process things. I have to see what I have to do before I do it. Like in "A Whole New Mind" when he talks about processing the images, I believe that I process situations the same way. My right brain will take over in a nervous situation so I can find a creative way to get out of it.

  44. The results I ended up withis that I am 42% left-brained and 58% right-brained. When reading the results and what the sub-categories meant I found that it was very accurate to how I process, learn, and express myself. I find that the classes that are less structured and open ended is where I learn best. In schools the fact that everyone learns differently and I think that it should really be taken into consideration when teaching a class so that every student learns as much as they can.

  45. My results on the brain test were 55% left brain, and 45% right brain. After taking this test and after reading the intro and first three chapters of AWNM I am beginnning to see what Pink is explaining in his book. Pink says that a right brained person seems to be more creative compared to a left brained person who is more sequential, and follows a schedule. However, Pink also says that it is possible for a person to be more than just right of left sided, a person can be a mixture of both, which is similar to me, because from taking this test I saw that I had strong characteristics of a left-brainer, but also had characteristics on my right side that balanced out the characteristics of my left brain.

All of this relates to education because some students learn better in enviorments that it there way of learning. If a student were to know what their learning type was they could alter their classes to fit their learning needs.

This information relates to me, because I have never realized what my brain was really like. I always thought of myself as a "creative" person, and never realized how truly sequential I am. From reading AWNM and taking this test I am able to really piece together how my brain works.

In certain areas, I agree with Pink. However, Pink's statement about how right-brainers will rule the working world I do not agree with. Even though there are more right-brainers present, I don't think that that systems of work will ever change.

  46. Mine said I was 47%left brain and 53%right brain. I think it means that I am going to be a bridge between the encridably creative and the number oriented people of the future. I think I learn best when I am emotionaly envolved in projects and I can understand why I am doing it. For the world I think it means the people seeking knowledge while be in Asia and here in america we will be trying to expand on that knowledge to make something more out of it.

  47. After taking the test, I had 50% Left Brain and 51% Right Brain. I guess I am balanced in many areas and it helps in several of situations that require a different type of thinking.
I would have to disagree with Daniel Pink with his ideas about those with a dominant right brain will succeed overall those with a more dominant left brain.
A brain that uses both sides of brain equally will allow humans to succeed, than those with a dominant left or right side. If a brain is balanced, there are more opportunities available to an individual. An individual can easily adapt to changes that occur frequently throughout life, if he is relying on both sides of his brain.

  48. My result was 47% left and 53% right. The approximate 50-50 ratio doesn’t surprise me too much. I like math because there is one answer to one question, and this leads to the left brain percents. I am pretty creative in writing, and this contributes the right brain percents. My lowest percent was in Reality based, with 0%, looking at the description, this makes a lot of sense. I always save projects/ assignments for the night before, and often finish them at lunch. My left brain will tell my right brain that it’s a bad idea, but the right brain will useally shut the left out. Thankfully I havn’t received a terrible grade on the assignment. Also, the reality based mentioned that one can deal with change easily. I can’t deal with change easily at all. The obvious one is the middle school to high school transition, but suprisingly, this didn’t screw with me too much, as both are basically the same thing, going from class to class to class to lunch to class to class to home, homework, bed, repeat. The one that mainly messes with me is changing between units. I think this is because during units in class, at the start of a unit the class is working pell mell, getting as much done as possible. By the end of the unit, the class is watching a movie, presenting projects, basically pretty laid back things. Once you switch from watching movies to lots of work, I get taken by surprise and am freaking out. When reading AWNM I thought that I was very left brained. Obviously under this more indepth test, i am a bit more right brained.

  49. Brains fascinate me. I really like learning about what each side of the brain does and how each side works. After taking the brain test, I scored 39% for my left brain and 61% for my right brain. I would say that is pretty accurate. Not surprisingly, I scored highest in the random category. That is also very accurate. I think brains are very captivating and I want to know more about them. I read an interesting line in A Whole New Mind that said “human beings [are] literally of two minds” (Pink, 14). I have always known that brains were split in two parts, I just never thought of it as two completely different minds. I like the fact that I am a right brainer because it shows me that I do not always think in black and white. I think outside the box and I like being creative. I do not like the fact that apparently left brainers get better grades because they are good at structuring. I think that people who are creative and do not do things sequentially and methodically should get good grades because they are not just following the structure and rules of the world.

  51. My results for the brain test said I was definitly left-brained:
    Your Left Brain Percentages

57% Sequential (Your most dominant characteristic)
    40% Reality-based
    30% Logical
    25% Symbolic
    14% Verbal
11% Linear (Your least dominant characteristic)

    Your Right Brain Percentages
37% Concrete (Your most dominant characteristic)
    24% Holistic
    24% Intuitive
    20% Fantasy-oriented
    19% Nonverbal
12% Random (Your least dominant characteristic)

After seeing these results, I have found that they were quite true. I think brains are very different for every person. A brain is like our looks. No person on this earth looks exactly like the other, and the same is true with brains. Our brain determines our thoughts, actions, reactions, opinions, and our overall personality.

These results definitly show that my learning and life needs to be organized and sequential.

So far in A Whole New Mind, I see why Daniel Pink thinks that right-brainers will rule the world. Only 1/3 of our class was left-brained, and 2/3 were right brained. We have all the technology we need in the world to organize information. Its the right side of our brains that will creatively use the tools our left side gives us.

  52. After taking the Art Institute of Vancouver’s Right Brain vs. Left Brain quiz, I was given the results of being 40% left brain and 60% right brained, with my most dominant trait being Randomness at 56%, and my least dominant trait being Verbalness at 0%. I learn best in a very hands on process, and I think that this serves me very well, both in school and in my everyday life. It helps me with my creative endeavors, and it may end up serving the world.

  53. After taking the brain test, I was told that I was 48% left brained and 52% right brained. My most dominant trait was Intuitiveness and my least dominant trait was being Concrete. For the most part I think that this is a right assumption. I have taken the test a few times for various reasons and all of the answers said that I was right brained, however the percentages were similar. I am a creative person and like to learn in an open environment whether it may seem like it or not in different situations. I do have some strong left- brained qualities however, such as Linear and Sequential thinking which help balance me out between the creative part of the life and the structured part.

  54. The results of the Right Brain vs. Left Brain test as well as the observations by Daniel Pink have changed my thinking about the brain. To begin with, I never really thought about just how much people need both sides of their brain. I, for one, used to think that the right brain controlled all creativity. However, I am now noticing that creative activities actually use both sides of the brain. In my experience, it takes the left-brain’s detail and sequencing to perform a piece of music. In addition, drawing actually requires math and geometry. I believe it is one of society’s misconceptions that people use either only their right brain or their left-brain. Now I see that people really need both. I was also shocked by the results of the Right Brain vs. Left Brain test. I scored 53% left brain and 47% right brain. I thought this was odd because I enjoy creative activities. I love coming up with stories and poetry. I also enjoy creating artwork, such as jewelry and posters. I always joke that I could not live without music. I thought I was either right brained or completely balanced. However, after completing this test, I found that many left brained traits actually fit my learning style. I am not a very organized person, but I feel less overwhelmed in clean, tidy spaces. In addition, I am extremely detail oriented. It takes me a great deal of time to complete textbook readings because I write down all the little details instead of focusing on the big picture. I also get frustrated in classes where the teacher does not provide much instruction. I hate guessing, and I do not like being spontaneous. These observations tell me that I might learn better if I spend more time on organization. I find that I am quite messy, not because I can stand the clutter, but because I do not always have the time to make sure every object is in place. I also think that I might be able to work faster if I spent less time focusing on all the little details. I think I would also benefit by taking a leap once in a while instead of spending hours to make sure that everything is perfect. Pink’s observations are very relevant to the way the world will have to change. It asserts that people are going to have to step away from the old view of education. I personally thought it was interesting that jobs in science and math are being taken over by computers and people in other countries. This makes the United States’ attempts to expand science and math is the schools while making dramatic cuts to arts look foolish. I also find it interesting that one of the six characteristics Pink advocates is play when some people in this country believe that recess and vacation periods, the few times I get to play, are a waste of time. These observations are also a reflection of how the world is changing. It seems to me that the countries that used to be behind, such as India, are now experiencing their own information age. If Americans do not want to lose their jobs, then they will have to take a step forward into the creativity that cannot be copied.

  55. I was not really surprised by my results (52 left and 48 right). I thought I would be pretty well balanced, but more in the left brained category just because of how I think about and organize things. My thoughts on brains are really how amazing they are. It is astounding to me that brains are so complex and everyone is so different and thinks in different ways. We certainly do not live in a boring world. I think the different ways people think should be considered and put to use in education and the world. Perhaps someday, when we have better means to figure it out, the way people think will be used to select a good job that they would excel in or learning curriculum that is custom made.

  56. When I saw my results after taking the brain test, I was pretty surprised. I found that I was 49% Left, 51%. This was a bit of a shock because I have always considered myself very left brained with math and science. Although this is just a test it really made think about how I learn best. Being able to understand how you learn best enables you to learn more efficiency. With discovering that I am more right brained then I could ever have guessed, I have begun to think about of my future and what my options. Honestly after reading A Whole New Mind intro-3, I was a little scared. This is because I believe that he makes a strong point about the job that my parents have been preparing me for since I started school, and the fact is that this job might not always be there for me. Although I am not completely sure whether we should all jump at this new way of right brain thinking, I know that left brained thinking is essential to the further progress technologically in the world.

  57. After taking the test, I was told that I am 55% right brained and 45% left brained. This doesn't really come as a surprise to me. I'm absentminded and a daydreamer; I'd rather craft a screenplay, as is my project for the month, than an essay. It's open, creative, and is a learning process in and of itself.

In school, my least favorite class is history. That class consists primarily of rigorous note taking and a day-to-day schedule that almost never varies. The final required rote memorization of facts. Most of these facts I have now forgotten, because of the way they were presented to me - as percentage points for my grade, rather than interesting information that I cared to learn and delve into. One of my favorite classes, on the other hand, is Biology. A lot of the work we do in there applies to real life; after all, it literally is the study of life. The best part of that class, though, is the labs. Although we are given instructions, lab is an opportunity to explore and apply things to our world and our life while learning new material in the process. I retain more of this information because of the hands-on learning experience I am given to accompany it.

After reading the beginning of AWNM, I think that I am beginning to see how beneficial having a right-brain oriented personality can be, especially with society's transition into Pink's "Conceptual Age." I think that it's time for humans to look past the Information Age and get moving on making our world more efficient and better overall with this new way of thinking.

  58. My brain test results showed me as 60% right and 40% left. I truly was thinking I would be more than 60% right brained. After reading AWNM I am realizing just how useful having right brained traits really can be. It is good that humans are moving from the information age and into the "Conceptual Age" which will make out world more efficient and overall better.
